Israel: Journalist Christine Renawy interrogated over allegations of defying Interior Security minister’s memo.
November 3, East Jerusalem, Occupied Territories—Journalist Christine Renawy of Palestine Television briefly detained and interrogated by Israeli authorities over allegations of breaching the Interior Security minister’s memo that prohibits her from working in the occupied territories and shut down Palestine TV office. The Coalition For Women In Journalism welcomes the release and calls upon the Israeli authorities to stop targeting and intimidating journalists in the occupied territories.
Christine was summoned for interrogation on November 2 by the Israeli intelligence office in East Jerusalem, Masskobia police station. Christine was held in custody and interrogated for a few hours over allegations of breaching the interior security minister’s memo that prohibits her from working in Jerusalem and shut down Palestine TV office. She was later released on a 3000 shekel bail (approximated 880 $).
This is the Seventh time that Christine is interrogated by Israeli authorities in less than a year regarding Palestine TV closure and her prohibition of working in Jerusalem. On December 6, 2019, Israeli authorities detained Palestine TV crew in occupied Jerusalem and seized their equipment and transmitting devices.
While the world was inspiriting the International Day To End Impunity For Crimes Against Journalists, Israeli authorities were busy committing a new crime of detention and intimidation of a woman journalist Christine Rinawi who suffers from constant legal harassment for the Israeli authorities.
Journalist Christine Rinawi commented to CFWIJ “ I was summoned for interrogation over a live video that I broadcasted from Jerusalem hospital about Politician and chief of negotiators Saaeb Oreiqat health condition. I explained the humanitarian aspect of this report. They gave me a warning and intensified that I shouldn’t do any further coverage. This is the seventh time that I get summoned for interrogation and briefly detained. I and my colleagues are expecting another interrogation soon as the closure memo for the Palestine TV office ends on the 10th of November. These constant intimidations and legal harassments aim to unseen Jerusalem coverage”
The Coalition For Women In Journalism welcomes the release of Christine and calls upon the Israeli authorities to stop intimidating and harassing the journalist over mere accusations and we note down that preventing the journalist from working is a clear infringement of press freedom.
