Macedonia: Journalist Miroslava Byrns receives threats over article criticizing the public response to Covid-19 measures

July 28, 2020, Skopje, Macedonia -- Sloboden Pechat reporter Miroslava Bryns received threats on July 23 following her coverage on Covid-19. Miroslava wrote an article for her newspaper criticizing the way people behave amidst the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, detailing a crowded wedding scene in Tetovo and indicating that it is against the legislation related to the fight against the Covid-19.

Soon after the journalist received a message reading “you will see what will happen to you” on your personal Facebook account. She took the messages to the public prosecutor’s office which then granted her 24-hour police protection. 

Journalists Union (SSNM) and Journalists Association (ZNM) of North Macedonia published a statement on Friday condemning the threats and calling for amendments to be made to the Criminal Law. The proposed amendments by the organizations aim that law enforcement will be obliged ex officio to take measures and actions to clear up the attacks on journalists. 

The Coalition For Women In Journalism reminds the public that attacks on physical safety and integrity of journalists harm the right of citizens to information. We call upon the authorities to implement necessary changes in the law in order to protect journalists and the public interest.
