August 10, 2021- Azucena Uresti, a broadcast journalist associated with the Radio Formula and Multimedios, was threatened in a video message from a drug cartel group. She is one the best-known TV hosts, who presents Milenio TV's nightly news program. Cartel Jalisco New Generation (CJNG) threatened other media outlets that cover the Michoacan region, where the cartel often disputes and engages with other armed groups. In the video message, Azucena Uresti was named and threatened directly. CFWIJ condemns the targeted threats against Azucena and demands the law enforcement authorities take necessary action and provide safety to the journalist. Since such threats can morph into physical assault, we demand an immediate response.

In the video message, the cartel head, Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, threatened Azucena and other media organizations, "Azucena Uresti, wherever you are, I will reach you and make you eat your words even if they accuse me of femicide because you do not know me: Rubén Oseguera Cervantes. I am not a debt collector or extortionist, nor a kidnapper.” Cervantes also mentioned his respect for news coverage that promotes freedom of expression. Pointing out his rival groups in the Michoacan region, he demanded fair and equal news reporting as he is not against freedom of expression. Several journalists and media organizations have condemned the threats against Azucena and extended their solidarity. Carlos Loret, a columnist for El UNIVERSAL, shared on Twitter, "Solidarity and strong condemnation of any sort of threat that puts journalists and media at risk."

The verbal attack against Azucena was strongly criticized by several political figures from various parties. Jesus Ramirez, the spokesman for the president, also shared his support, "In the face of threats to the media by CJNG, the federal government will take appropriate measures to protect the threatened journalists and media. Democratic freedoms are guaranteed along with the right to information for citizens."

Journalist circles and political figures have also asked the present government to protect Azucena Uresti, as required after receiving such direct threats.

The Coalition For Women In Journalism demands immediate security for Azucena Uresti and the apprehension of the criminals who threatened her. We urge law enforcement to probe the video message and catch the culprits intimidating Azucena. The CFWIJ believes that women journalists must be allowed to work in a safe environment free of fear and intimidation.
