Mexico: Journalist Lizbeth Hernández was attacked and detained while covering a women's rally.
November 13, 2020 - Journalist Lizbeth Hernández was detained and battered while following women's protests in Mexico. We condemn this attack against the journalist and demand an end to the increasing police violence in Mexico.
Journalist Lizbeth Hernández was detained by the police while following a feminist group’s occupation of the State Commission for Human Rights (CODEM) building in Ecatepec. She was subjected to this harsh police intervention in September of 2020.
Despite being identified by the police as a journalist, Lizbeth was detained, her mobile phone was seized and she was prevented from reporting the demonstration. The police also pushed her while she was covering the rally. The journalist was later put in a police vehicle without being informed where she was being taken, while police insulted her and the other detainees. When a group of women arrived with a request to release the detainees, the police attacked the women with tear gas. Even once the journalist was released, the police attacks continued. Security forces attempted to strangle another female journalist as well as trying to crash into Lizbeth’s car, breaking one of the windows.
Due to the violent attacks and harsh intervention of the police, covering protests have become significantly dangerous to women journalists in Mexico. Women journalists who follow the demonstrations face brutal police violence, despite being known as reporters. The police do not distinguish between journalists and protesters. Many women journalists are harassed, intimidated and arbitrarily detained.
The Coalition For Women In Journalism documented two violent murders of journalists and many cases of harassment in Mexico so far in 2020. Many women journalists are under attack by security forces, they even face death threats for simply doing their job. Journalism means keeping the public informed and conveying events as they happen. We condemn these vicious attacks against journalists and, once again, such interventions cannot silence journalists. ...

México: Agreden y detienen a la reportera Lizbeth Hernández durante la cobertura de una marcha de mujeres.
13 de noviembre de 2020 – La periodista Lizbeth Hernández fue arrestada y golpeada mientras cubría una protesta de mujeres en México. Condenamos este ataque y exigimos el fin de la creciente violencia policial en el país latinoamericano.
La periodista Lizbeth Hernández fue arrestada por la policía mientras cubría la ocupación del edificio de la Comisión de Derechos Humanos del Estado de México (CODEM) por un grupo feminista en Ecatepec. La dura intervención policial a la que fue sometida la reportera sucedió en septiembre de 2020.
A pesar de haber sido identificada como periodista por la policía, Lizbeth fue detenida; su teléfono móvil fue confiscado y se le impidió informar sobre la manifestación. La policía la golpeó mientras realizaba su trabajo durante la marcha. Más tarde, la periodista fue transportada en un vehículo policial – en el que los agentes la sometieron a vejaciones, junto a otros detenidos – sin ser informada sobre su destino. Cuando un grupo de mujeres solicitó que se liberase a los detenidos, la policía las atacó con gases lacrimógenos. Incluso cuando la reportera fue liberada, los ataques de la policía continuaron. Miembros de las fuerzas de seguridad también trataron de estrangular a otra mujer periodista e intentaron estrellarse contra el coche de Lizbeth, rompiendo una de las ventanas.
Debido a los violentos ataques y a la dura intervención de la policía, informar sobre protestas se ha convertido en una labor extremadamente peligrosa para mujeres periodistas en México. Las reporteras que cubren manifestaciones afrontan violencia policial, a pesar de ser identificadas como tales. La policía no distingue entre periodistas y manifestantes. Muchas mujeres periodistas son acosadas, intimidadas y detenidas arbitrariamente.
La Coalición por las Mujeres en el Periodismo (CFWIJ) documentó dos asesinatos violentos de reporteras y numerosos casos de acoso en México durante 2020 hasta el 13 de noviembre. Muchas mujeres periodistas son agredidas por las fuerzas de seguridad e incluso enfrentan amenazas de muerte por el mero hecho de ejercer su profesión. La intención del periodismo es informar a la gente y transmitir eventos a medida que ocurren. Condenamos estos ataques contra periodistas y recordamos que estas intervenciones no silenciarán a los periodistas.
