November 20, 2020, Ramallah, Palestine—Radio journalist and anchor, Aseel Soliman is threatened with expulsion for expressing her opinion about the new approach of relations normalization with Israel. The Coalition For Women In Journalism supports Assel's right to express her views.
Assel has commented on Sheikh Hussein’s decision to pursue normal relations with occupation authorities in one of her show episodes. The management of the radio suspended her and opened interrogation about this episode. The episode was also removed from the radio website.
Some news circulated on social media platforms that Assel and her father are threatened by detention. The news referred that Palestinian authorities ordered the radio to remove the episode and intimidate the journalist and her family members.
Users of social media platforms launched a hashtag in solidarity with the journalist and mentioned that what she said in this episode represents all of them. They called upon the radio to halt its punitive measures against Assel.
Freedom of expression is a key pillar for any society. If journalists can’t express their idea or write freely, their ability to do their work would be compromised. Ideas should be refuted by dialogue, not punitive measures.
The Coalition For Women In Journalism expresses its solidarity with Assel against these managerial decisions and we call upon Raya FM radio to allow the journalist to pursue her work. CFWIJ urges the Palestinian authorities to refrain from intimidating and threatening the journalist and her family.
