Thailand: CFWIJ denounces the authorities’ harassment of women activists and human rights defenders.

February 4, 2021, Bangkok— Women activists at the forefront of the pro-democracy movement in Thailand experience harassment and human rights violations by state and non-state actors. A report published by The Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders identifies these attacks as a method to deter dissidents. The Coalition For Women In Journalism condemns the dangerous targeting of women activists in Thailand. 

Women have been at the forefront of the protests in Thailand that began in February 2020. The demonstrations were sparked by the dissolution of the Future Forward Party, which was critical of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha. The movement has demanded greater political freedoms, criticized the gender imbalance in Thai society, and, in an unprecedented move, demanded reform in the Thai monarchy. Women and non-binary activists (henceforth referred to as WHRD) of all ages have been at the very center of these developments.

A report published by The Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders titled, Standing tall - Women human rights defenders at the forefront of Thailand’s pro-democracy protests, has revealed the harassment and intimidations WHRDs have faced in their plight. 

According to the report, at least 11 WHRDs, including one minor, were prosecuted for their participation in peaceful demonstrations. At least four were arrested before being released, and some face upwards of ten criminal charges filed against them. WHRDs have also faced verbal abuse, sexual harassment (in public and online), and surveillance. Furthermore, state affiliates are visiting the activists’ families and colleagues in an effort to intimidate and discourage them from political protests. 

CFWIJ expresses concern over the disturbing findings in these reports. We stand in solidarity with the women and non-binary activists seeking reform in Thailand. The intimidation and harassment of civilians for demanding democratic rights is deplorable.  The government’s ploy to weaponize gender and sexuality against WHRDs is an abhorrent abuse of power.
