Tunis: Online trolling of journalist Mona Al Bou-Azizi due to her coverage.
November 14, 2020, Tunis — Journalist Mona Al Bou-Azizi attacked online over her coverage. The Coalition For Women In Journalism stands with the journalist against these odious threats.
Journalist Mona Bou Azizi was attacked on social media platforms over publishing a report revealing prostitution and sex trafficking dens in Sousa, Nabel, and Alqairoan. The journalist published a story in Al-Shorouk daily newspaper discussing sex work and dens in Tunis.
Following the story, the National Security Union’s official page in Al-Qayruan released a statement targeting and attacking the journalist, accusing her of spreading false news. Many accounts affiliated with this webpage threatened the journalist, called her names and left misogynist comments on her posts.
The Tunisian Journalists National Union released a statement supporting the journalist against these online attacks, calling upon the ministry of interior to conduct an in-depth investigation into these threats and to hold the respective accounts responsible. The union also called upon all civil servants to respect press freedom.
Mona works as a journalist for the Al-Shorouk Daily newspaper and is known for her thorough investigative reports.
The Coalition For Women In Journalism has raised the issue of online trolling many times and organized several campaigns to tackle this torment phenomenon. CFWIJ demands strict and assertive policies to combat online trolling and recognize the severity of these threats and their consequences.
CFWIJ stands with Mona Al Bou-Azizi against these malicious attacks and joins the press syndicate’s demands for thorough investigations into the matter. CFWIJ reaffirms that women journalists' safety starts with creating safer cyberspace on social media platforms.
