Turkey: Police physically assault 12 women journalists' covering student protests

September 7, 2021, Istanbul – The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) is alarmed at the actions of the İstanbul Police. The police physically assaulted 12 women journalists covering student protests in İstanbul on Wednesday. Police confiscated their press IDs and beat up journalists filming police brutality against the protestors. We condemn the violation of journalists' right to report. We denounce the brute force employed by İstanbul Police against journalists doing their jobs and students exercising their right to protest. These are both severe violations of a free democracy. CFWIJ demands immediate release of seized press cards. We call for immediate action against the officers responsible. Turkey must ensure journalists feel free and safe to report in the country. 

The protest call came over the arrest of two students on Tuesday based on a complaint lodged against them by recently appointed rector of Boğaziçi University,  Naci İnci. The students were accused of insulting İnci, damaging the university’s property and hindering his duties. As scores of students gathered on the campus against the arrest, police arrived in riot gear and launched a baton charge. At least 14 students were beaten and several were detained by the police.

Journalists on the site were barred from covering the protest. At least 12 women journalists were injured as the police physically attacked the reporters on the ground. The press cards of many journalists were seized. 

Cumhuriyet reporter Tuğba Özer took to her Twitter account and shared the impediment against them with a video. She quoted, “A journalist's effort to film the events. It's like grabbing a corner". 

Turkish students and educationists have continued protests against what they term as government interference in academia. Since President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s controversial appointment of Melih Bulu, an academic and former political candidate, as rector of Boğaziçi University in January 2021, unrest has continued. Bulu was dismissed by a presidential decree in July following six-month long protests and replaced by İnci.

Bulu was appointed directly by Erdoğan and dismissed by the same. Students and academics have stressed that their objections weren’t against Bulu but against the method of his appointment. They have repeatedly denounced government interference in educational institutions and the appointment has fueled youngsters' frustration against the incumbent government. Police have clashed with protestors on multiple occasions, with hundreds arrested during demonstrations. Erdoğan has gone as far as to dub demonstrators as “terrorists”. Naturally, Wednesday's protests were critical for journalists to cover. 

‘It’s like reporting in a battlefield’

“We were physically assaulted. They [police] said that we entered their security area and that we could take their weapons and use them against the police,” said Sendika.Org reporter Ceylan Bulut. The police had set up barricades preventing journalists from reporting on the protests, explained Ceylan, speaking to CFWIJ. “We were just simply trying to do our job.” 

Another journalist on the ground, Artı Gerçek’s reporter Yağmur Kaya, said journalists were prevented from filming the police’s response to the protests. Journalists were also threatened by the police, who used riot shields to block them. Yağmur's press card was confiscated. Although she repeatedly requested her press card be returned, the security forces did not give it back.

“Independent journalism in Turkey is like reporting in a conflict zone. Even in battlefields journalists cannot be interfered with, but here, we journalists are being prevented from reporting on people’s democratic right to protest,” said Yağmur. 

Ceylan, Yağmur, Meral Danyıldız (ARTI TV), Fatoş Erdoğan (Dokuz8Haber), Yağmur Kaya (Arti Gerçek), Pınar Gayip (ETHA), Ceylan Bulut (Sendika.Org), Zeynep Kuray, Gaye Can (ANKA), Hüda Aslan ( KRT), Özge Doğan (Yol TV), Dilek Şen (Bianet), Şükran Şençekiçer (Medyascope), Tuğba Özer (Cumhuriyet Newspaper) were among the journalists detained by the police at the barrier. 

Dokuz8Haber reporter Fatoş Erdoğan and journalist Zeynep Kuray were subjected to harsh police intervention. Journalists were beaten by the police force. 

The CFWIJ strongly condemns the police brutality against journalists and citizens. Earlier in March, the police physically assaulted journalists covering student protests at Boğaziçi University while following the student protests. Reporters of Dokuz8Haber and Artı Gerçek were detained during the protests. Police interference with journalists simply doing their jobs cannot be tolerated. Journalists must be free to report. We demand immediate action against the responsible officers and immediate release of confiscated press cards. We urge the security forces and the Turkish government to refrain from employing such tactics against journalists. Journalists have a right to report and citizens have the right to protest in any free democracy.  

Türkiye: 12 kadın gazetecinin haber yapma hakkı ihlal edildi – CFWIJ gazetecilere yönelik polis şiddetini kınıyor

7 Eylül 2021, İstanbul – Boğaziçi Üniversitesi’ne Prof. Dr. Melih Bulu’dan sonra atanan Prof. Dr. Naci İnci’nin şikayeti üzerine tutuklanan iki öğrenciyi desteklemek için orada bulunan topluluğu takip eden en az 12 kadın gazetecinin haber yapma hakkı polis tarafından ihlal edildi. Gazetecilerin basın kartlarına el konuldu, birçoğu darp edildi. Gazetecilikte Kadın Koalisyonu (CFWIJ) olarak gazetecilerin haber yapma hakkının ihlal edilmesini kınıyoruz. Gazetecilere uygulanan polis şiddeti kabul edilemez. El konulan basın kartlarının derhal iade edilmesini talep ediyoruz.  

İstanbul’da Boğaziçi Üniversitesi’ne Prof. Dr. Melih Bulu’dan sonra Cumhurbaşkanlığının atadığı Prof. Naci İnci’nin şikayetinin ardından iki öğrenci tutuklandı. Tutuklamalara yönelik açıklama yapmak için bir araya gelen öğrencileri takip eden gazeteciler, polis tarafından ablukaya alınarak haber yapma hakları ihlal edildi. Açıklamayı takip etmek isteyen gazeteciler darp edildi. Basın kartlarına el konuldu. En az 12 kadın gazeteci haber takibi sırasında polis şiddetine maruz kaldı. 

Ablukaya alınan gazeteciler arasında Meral Danyıldız (ARTI YV), Fatoş Erdoğan (Dokuz8Haber), Yağmur Kaya (Artı Gerçek), Pınar Gayıp (ETHA), Ceylan Bulut (Sendika.Org), Zeynep Kuray, Gaye Can (ANKA), Hüda Aslan (KRT), Özge Doğan (Yol TV), Dilek Şen (Bianet), Şükran Şençekiçer (Medyascope), Tuğba Özer (Cumhuriyet Gazetesi) yer alıyor. 

Artı Gerçek muhabiri Yağmur Kaya’nın CFWIJ’ye aktardığına göre gazetecilerin çekim yapması engellendi. Gazeteciler polis tarafından tehdit edilerek çevik kuvvet kalkanlarıyla ablukaya alındı. Yağmur’un basın kartına el konuldu. Basın kartını emniyet güçlerinden defalarca geri istemesine rağmen geri alamadı.

Yağmur Kaya: Bağımsız gazetecilik yapmak savaş meydanında olmak gibi 

Gazeteci bugün gelişen olaylara yönelik, “Türkiye'de tarafsız, bağımsız gazetecilik yapmak savaş meydanında olmak gibi. Abartmıyorum. Savaş alanında bile gazetecilere müdahale edilemezken biz basın mensuplarına, demokratik protesto hakkını kullanmak üzere eylem düzenleyenleri takip ederken hep müdahale ediliyor.” ifadelerini kullandı. 

Ceylan Bulut: “Sadece işimizi yapmaya çalışıyoruz”

CFWIJ’e konuşan Sendika.Org muhabiri Ceylan Bulut ise polisin basını ablukaya aldığını ve ancak milletvekillerinin müdahalesiyle ablukadan çıkabildiklerini söyledi. Gazeteci, “İtildik çevik kuvvet kalkanlarıyla engellendik ve kendilerinin güvenlik alanlarına girdiğimizi onların silahlarını alıp onlara karşı kullanabileceğimizi söylediler. Oysaki sadece işimizi yapmaya çalışıyorduk.” şeklinde konuştu. 

Twitter hesabından polisin engellemesinin videosunu paylaşan Cumhuriyet muhabiri Tuğba Özer ise “Bir gazetecinin görüntü alma çabası. Köşe kapmaca gibi” ifadesini kullandı.

Dokuz8Haber muhabiri Fatoş Erdoğan ve gazeteci Zeynep Kuray ise polisin sert müdahalesine maruz kaldı. Gazeteciler darp edildi.

Boğaziçi Üniversitesi’nde daha önce de Prof. Dr. Melih Bulu’nun rektör olarak atanmasının ardından öğrenci protestolarını takip eden gazeteciler polis şiddetine maruz kalmıştı. LGBTİ+ bayrağı taşıdıkları için gözaltına alınan 24 öğrencinin savcılığa sevk edilmek üzere Çağlayan Adliyesi’ne getirilmesini takip eden Dokuz8Haber muhabiri Ebrar Başyiğit ve Artı Gerçek muhabiri Yağmur Kaya gözaltına alınmıştı. Dokuz8Haber muhabiri Fatoş Erdoğan’ın ise çekim yapması engellenmişti.
