European Union: Journalism award will be given to honor murdered journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia
/October 7, 2020, Brussels -- The Coalition For Women In Journalism is delighted to learn that the EU Parliament agreed to create a new award in honor of murdered Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.
The Daphne Caruana Galizia award which is worth €20,000 will be given as a way to “distinguish outstanding journalism revolving around the principles and values of the European Union,” according to a statement from the Greens group.
First set of winners will be given their award in October 2021, selected from independent journalists whose reporting is of interest and linked to the values of the European Charter of Human Rights.
On October 16, 2017 Daphne Caruana Galizia was assassinated on October 16, 2017 in a car-bomb attack a few metres away from her house in Bidnija, Malta. The Coalition For Women In Journalism has been documenting the ever slow growing judiciary process concerning this black day for freedom of expression.
We welcome the decision by the EU Parliament and hope it will be a new step to recognize threats that women journalists in the EU face.
A really proud moment for Europe, but especially for Malta. Finally, after years of terrible news. https://t.co/8PWpJHT0ju
